Chapter seven of ten

Off-site visibility

Engines look for agreement across the web before they name a product. The lists, reviews, articles and posts you leave to others decide much of what gets said about you.

Buyers ask How do we get onto the lists AI cites?

Read this chapter as

The short answer

Use your tracking tool to pull the third-party pages engines cite that name your competitors and leave you out. Reach out to those first. Engines already pull information from those pages, so a mention there feeds straight into the answers your buyers see. Some publishers charge for a spot. Swaps and earned coverage are the other routes. Keep your own site correct first, so what others repeat about you is right.

Engines look for consensus

When an engine picks products to name, it weighs what many sources say about them. A brand that only praises itself on its own site gives the engine one voice. A brand named across lists, reviews and articles gives it several that agree.

Depth beats spread. Kevin Indig found that engines rebuild their trusted sources topic by topic, so a few placements on the top sources for your topic outweigh many scattered ones (Growth Memo, June 2026). Eli Schwartz adds a warning. Placed mentions that describe a brand better than reality get outweighed by everything else written about it (Product-Led SEO, July 2026).

Find the pages engines already cite

Your tracking tool shows which third-party pages engines cite for the prompt set from chapter 5. That list is your outreach list. These pages drive results because engines already pull information from them. The goal is a brand mention on those pages. A mention counts even without a link, so track mentions apart from SEO links.

  1. Export the cited pages

Pull every URL cited for your commercial prompts over the past quarter.

  2. Remove what you have

Drop your own pages and any page that already names you.

  3. Rank by influence

Sort by how often each page is cited across your prompts. Review each one for quality and relevance before outreach.

  4. Work down the list

Start with pages that name your competitors and leave you out.

  • First, cited pages that name competitors and omit you

These have the strongest direct effect. Expect to trade or pay for the spot.

  • Next, a new list on the same cited site

A guest list on a domain engines already trust.

  • Then, similar sites

Sites with the same audience and format as the ones engines cite.

  • Last, relevant sites in your category

Broader coverage that builds consensus over time.

Getting onto lists

Best-of lists answer the "best X for Y" questions where engines name products. That makes a spot on a cited list the strongest placement you can win. Brands reach those spots three ways, each with its own trade-offs.

  • Swaps

Two vendors that overlap little each add the other to a list on their own site. Each side names the exact slot it gives back. Many vendors prefer a swap to cash, since a spot on a cited list is worth more to them than a fee.

A caution. Google's spam guidance now covers paid and reciprocal brand mentions, so keep each swap relevant to the list, honest about the product and small in number. In practice, it is very hard to win enough spots on cited lists without swaps, so treat them as a careful tool and pair them with earned inclusion.

  • Earned inclusion

Some editors add products that fit their list when asked, especially with fresh facts, pricing and screenshots ready to use.

  • Paid listings

Some publishers charge for a spot. We have seen quotes as high as $1,500 for a labeled featured box. Google lists inauthentic mentions as something to avoid. Lily Ray reads that guidance as covering paid and reciprocal brand mentions on third-party pages. Paying is tricky. When you do pay, insist on an honest label.

Our own list study shows why lists earn this effort. In Q3 2026, listicles on independent sites rose from 11.6% to 12.4% of citations across our clients' categories. When a vendor's list was cited, the vendor was named in 45.4% of answers, against 16.3% on the same questions without it. Somewhat known vendors gained the most, from 12.5% to 54.8%, and dominant brands gained the least.

If you decide

Agree on rules for competitor swaps with legal and sales before outreach starts. Some teams rule them out, which narrows the list.

If you do the work

Pitch named people at the publisher. Offer a one-line positioning for your slot, such as "best for teams under 50 that need approvals on mobile".

Review sites

Review platforms such as G2, Capterra and Trustpilot shape sentiment, because they carry buyers' own experience. They also travel well. Omnia data published by Kevin Indig showed that only 2.37% of cited URLs appeared in all three of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Review platforms were among the few sources cited across engines (Growth Memo, May 2026). In our list study, review sites and directories rose from 5.8% to 7.4% of citations between Q2 and Q3 2026.

Seer reported that brands without a Trustpilot profile had a 1% median AI citation rate, against 53.5% for brands with 1 to 13 reviews (2026, 1,926 brands). The link is correlational. It still suggests a small base of honest reviews helps.

  • Complete your profiles

Keep categories, pricing, features and integrations current on every review site where buyers compare you.

  • Ask customers to review

Ask happy customers at natural moments, such as after onboarding or a renewal. Leave the wording to them.

LinkedIn and YouTube before Reddit

We tell clients to focus on LinkedIn and YouTube before Reddit. Brands control what they publish on the first two. Reddit belongs to its communities. Its weight in answers swings.

  • LinkedIn

Publish articles that adapt your decision-stage content with an original angle. Keep company pages current with your positioning. Indig cites LinkedIn's own testing, which found named, timestamped expert content gained visibility fastest (Growth Memo, June 2026).

  • YouTube

YouTube mentions correlated with AI brand visibility at about 0.737 (Ahrefs, December 2025). Views count for little. Otterly found 40.83% of cited videos had under 1,000 views (March 2026).

  • Reddit

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 4.42% to 0.39% after August 14, 2026, according to Otterly. Eli Schwartz argues brands should take part on Reddit as a social network, with AEO as a side effect (August 2026).

PR and expert voices

Press coverage and podcasts help when they sit inside your category, where engines look for answers about your product. Coverage in general business press does less for a specific software question. Eli Schwartz argues that PR now shapes how models see a brand. Being named, he says, needs a credible third party (Product-Led SEO, September 2026).

People count as well as publications. Indig recommends bylined articles from your subject experts and data others can embed (Growth Memo, June 2026). Original research gives journalists and list writers a reason to name you.

If you decide

After Flying Cat was added to several "best AEO agency" lists through swaps, a major request for proposal arrived within a week.

If you do the work

Pitch your research to the authors of lists engines cite. A fresh number is a better hook than a product announcement.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia ranks among the sources engines cite heavily. Similarweb found it was ChatGPT's top cited domain at 13.15% of citations and second in Google AI Mode at 5.21% (U.S. prompts, January to February 2026). Profound reported it at 7.8% of ChatGPT citations over August 2024 to June 2025.

Wikipedia's own rules limit what a company can do there. Its conflict of interest guideline says paid editors must disclose who pays them. It also strongly discourages them from editing articles about their employer directly. Companies should propose changes on the article's talk page, where volunteer editors decide. The guideline also asks editors with a conflict of interest to send new articles through the Articles for Creation review process.

These studies measure Wikipedia across all topics. We found zero studies on Wikipedia's weight in answers about B2B software.

Fix what third parties get wrong

Correcting the record across the web is a long-term project. Start on your own site, as chapter 6 covers, since third parties often copy from it. Then run the branded prompts from chapter 5 and open the sources behind each wrong answer. Those pages are the ones to ask for an update, starting with review sites and the lists engines cite often.

Eli Schwartz suggests starting from an audit of what the internet already says about you, then closing the distance between that and what is true (July 2026).

What to skip

  • Manufactured reviews and community posts

Aleyda Solis says fabricated reviews and fake community signals trade lasting trust for visibility that can backfire. Lily Ray reads Google's warning as covering paid brand mentions inserted into Reddit and other social threads.

  • Placements on irrelevant sites

A mention on a site outside your category adds little consensus where engines look.

  • Claims your product can only partly back up

Engines weigh all that is written about you. Overstated placements get outweighed.

Other views

  • Links still count

A Semrush study of 1,000 domains found Authority Score the strongest backlink predictor of AI mentions, with nofollow links weighing about the same as followed ones (cited in Growth Memo, June 2026).

  • Reddit is retrieved more than cited

Ahrefs found ChatGPT cited Reddit in 1.93% of the cases where it retrieved a Reddit page (April 2026).

  • Engines disagree on sources

91.07% of cited URLs appeared in only one of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews (Growth Memo, May 2026), so a placement may help one engine far more than another.
